Guatemala Team

November 11:

We joined the church in Guatemala this morning. The church gave us a great welcome as we entered into worship. The color green represents “hope” for this community. Two languages, one church, one God!

We also toured the Compassion office, which is housed in the church. It is amazing to see where they keep track of all the children who are a part of Compassion. They have a great team of volunteers and staff and the integrity and care they provide for the children are incredible.

In the afternoon, we went on home visits. We spent time praying with families. Their greatest needs are clean water and jobs. We also spent time with children while their parents received water filtration systems and were ministered by Compassion. The church here gave 50 filtration systems that were provided by FBC Allen.

November 10:

We had the opportunity to have dinner with several Guatemalan staff members who work with Compassion. We were also able to meet a young lady who is an alumnus of the Compassion program. She now teaches and ministers to children in her community. We also met a teenage boy who is still in the program. It was awesome to hear God’s great work in their lives and how Compassion had ministered to them. We really enjoyed hearing how the monthly gifts sponsors give make a difference in the children and the churches and communities.

Guatemala Mission Wrap Up

What a great week of ministry in Guatemala! The majority of our group were grandmothers whom God used to connect with children who needed to feel the love of God through the hugs, smiles and warm voices of these dear ladies. Many in our group had never been on a mission trip before and had never traveled outside of our country, so it was a growing experience of ‘next steps kind of faith’ on the part of many in this group.

God’s amazing plan of salvation and love was shared with hundreds of people during this week through VBS, Bible stories, salvation bracelets, crafts, singing in English and Spanish, leading a pastor’s and wives conference, hosting a workshop for local government officials, feeding the hungry both young and elderly, testimonies, worship, and the list goes on.

Thank you church family for your prayerful support for each one who traveled with us. Continue to pray for the Holy Spirit to move in the lives of the people of Guatemala. And to God be the glory for any and all eternal good accomplished in this effort!

Guatemala Mission Trip

Sunday morning, we were in church together in Allen, Texas, followed by dinner together at The House of Blessing in Guatemala City!

team-meal-in-guatemala-city

We conducted a mini-VBS for 60-75 children complete with singing, a Bible story about Noah, juice, cookies and a rainbow craft!

While the kids were involved in the VBS time, the moms made salvation bracelets as we shared the gospel.

After our mini-VBS, we served lunch to 20 Senior Adults and our folks led a wonderful time of music, testimonies, and preaching.

What a joy-filled, God-focused day! Gloria a Dios, for sure!

Here’s a picture of Damaris, one of our translators. She is an amazing young woman who loves the Lord and has complete mastery of the English language – and oh, by the way, she also has a Black Belt in Karate!

Guatemala Update

Good day of ministry. We were able to go into two schools today. They were both schools that church on the march had never been to. The second school was a school with children who experience abuse, have either no mother or father, and their one parent is most likely an alcoholic. We were able to see 200 students today. It will be slow going with schools because they have no idea about the group. But we received very positive feedback from both and both said they would love for groups to return.

Another part of the team did construction work on the church…FBC of San Marcos. The group is installing a ceiling in a couple of rooms to be used for homeless people. We will also be doing work in their worship center.

Work at schools continues tomorrow. Construction continues as well. We will also be doing a conference as well as joining FBC San Marcos in worship tomorrow night.

Facebook Updates from Guatemala

The week of training in Guatemala is off to a great start! We had a great flight very early Monday morning.

In addition to training, we were able to get to know many of the locals and hear their stories by being a part of their daily activities.

Jimmy Smith and Pastor Chad spent time with many church leaders.  They are a passionate group.  A problem for the small Baptist churches in Guatemala is the mega church and the prosperity gospel.  Continue to pray that truth will be heard.

Yesterday, Julie and Delanee were able to work with a group of children workers in the church.  They planned for 25 and had twice that many show up.

Today will be another day of training and encouraging the leaders.  Pray that many will attend and that the Holy Spirit will move through the group.

Update and Pictures from Guatemala

Tuesday, August 7

Three great days in Guatemala; praise the Lord. We arrived in Guatemala City Sunday afternoon. After unloading our luggage and supplies at The House of Blessing, we headed to Antigua for lunch, shopping and sightseeing.
Monday morning we loaded our bus, Jennifer, and off to Santa Barbara we went (FYI – seems that all the buses here have female names on their front windows.)

What an exciting and exhausting day it was. We met Pastor Benedicto and some volunteers from his church including his two daughters. Our interpreters and Ernesto also joined us. Ernesto is a huge blessing for our group. His excitement for serving the Lord in working with children is unbelievable. He can get 200 children involved in singing & praising the Lord in a few minutes.

Monday, we visited 4 schools and led a park ministry in the evening. Tuesday, we visited 3 more schools. Schools in these cities are MUCH different than in the U.S. – no doors, no air conditioning, not many whiteboards, cinder block walls, concrete floors and no technology. In one classroom, bottlecaps with written numbers were used to teach counting. Some things are the same in any country – fun with friends, beautiful smiling faces, inquisitive minds, laughing at Ernesto’s comical singing motions and God’s love for each one of these children.

Praises : We were able to share Christ’s love with more than 1000 children. Providing bibles (we bought 3000 New Testaments for Pastor Benedicto give to students.) Having the opportunity to meet Pastor Benedicto and hear of the work of his 80-member church. This church has started 5 churches & 3 missions. Every Tuesday, Ernesto teaches a “value lesson” to 2000 children in the schools.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, we will visit three more schools and lead a park ministry in the evening.

Please pray for the 18 members of our church, pastor Benedicto, Ernesto, the translators/volunteers and the students/teachers we will encounter. Pray for our health and energy. Pray that God will be glorified in all that we do and say.

~ Bill

Guatemala 2012

Visited 3 schools today. Made salvation bookmarks with over 1000 students. Almost 1000 bibles were given to the older students. Went to the park this evening but only did recreation w kids due to rain. We moved into a covered area to play but were unable to do ladies and men’s studies but kids heard about Jesus 🙂 just got to new hotel and shower -hot today. It’s 10 and breakfast is at 6:45 then more schools tomorrow. Looks like hurricane won’t directly affect us and rain was forecast prior to Ernesto anyway, so we all came prepared.

Final Updates from Guatemala

Day 4

Saludos desde la ciudad de Guatemala. Mi espanol es muy malo estonces escribire estoen ingles.

Today, Wednesday June 1, the older ladies met with the women from the community. Janice, Linda, Kathy and I met with 13 ladies in the morning at the church on the top of the hill and 9 more in the afternoon under the bridge. The ladies loved the craft Janice had prepared and enjoyed being together and the friendship of other women and the Americans. Kathy and Linda were in their element because they held the precious babies while the mothers worked on painting and decorating the plastic flowers. We found out they are very talented, much more that we are, and they did not need the example we put together for them. These ladies are living in the community raising families, most of them without husbands. They are single mothers struggling to make ends meet. We cannot even imagine a life like theirs. We take so much for granted in our livesñ a trip like this will remind you of that.

Today we shared a short devotion with the ladies from Psalm 139. We learned how God has created us, all of us, with a plan and a purpose in mind. He does not place us here for no reason. We were reminded from this Psalm that even when bad things happen, God has still made us fearfully and wonderfully, and our lives are written down in His book even before we were born. The ladies shared prayer requests with us, some requesting prayer for family members who were away from church, some needing wisdom to raise their children in godly homes, some asked us to pray they would have the money to pay the next rent payment. These women work as nurses, maids, selling vegetables and making tortillas for a living. They love their families and especially their children, and they want the best for them. They were reminded today that everything we have is from God and we owe Him our thanks and our worship.

My translator today was Betsy. She shared with me that she is a Christian but had been away from the church and her faith for many years. Her parents raised her in a Christian home and her mother prayed for her for years, asking God to protect her and bring her back to him. Her mother{s prayers were answered, and Betsy has come back to the Lord and is now working with Buckner and other ministries to share her faith. There is nothing like the prayers of a mother.

The rest of our team worked with the children teaching the story of Zacchaeus and sharing the plan of salvation through beads and bracelets. The children love our team and are especially drawn to the young people. The kids learned today that Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus, but even more importantly, Jesus saw him. They learned how to make the decision to follow Christ in their own lives and how much they are loved by God. Enough for Him to send His only Son to die for them. The children enjoy the crafts very muchñ they love leaving with something to take home. It is heart warming to have them meet us at the door each day, waiting for our big bus to pull into their community. This is an amazing team, ready and willing to do whatever needs to be done to minister to the children and make them feel special.

Tomorrow is our last day with the children. Pray for us to have strength to finish strong, to leave these children and their families with the knowledge of God{s amazing love and provision for them. God is doing a great work through Buckner in Guatemala and I am so thankful to have joined Him here.

Hasta manana!

In Christ Alone,
Pam

Day 5

Today was our final day with the kids from the CTC and the church.  Today we talked about following the example of Christ as we shared the story of the feeding of the five thousand.  Kids learned the verse Philippians 2:5 and talked about how we should have the same attitude as Christ.  In both places we had are biggest number of kids.  In the CTC we actually had to turn kids away because we ran out of room.  Our team did an amazing job with the extra kids.  It was chaotic at times but it was also incredible.  God definately was with us as we continued share the love of Christ with these children.

One of the amazing things about these kids is how they take care of one another.  You can tell they are truly a community.  In both places we saw older ones helping younger ones, brothers and sisters taking care of each other.  They made sure everyone got candy, everyone got a nametag, and everyone was able to participate.  I’m blown away at how resiliant these kids are in the face of difficult circumstances.  Jeff Mize and I were allowed to tour one of the homes under the bridge.  It was made of cinder blocks and sheet metal.  There were 3 very small rooms (a kitchen, a wash area, and a bedroom).  It was one of the poorest places I’ve ever been, but it was it home for this family.  They were glad to show us around.

Today we were also able to donate all of our supplies from the week, as well as clothing and other donations that had come from home.  They staff at the CTC (which also ministers to the church) was extremely grateful.  One of the highlights were the dress and shorts that Dulcy White and her team had made for the kids in Guatemala.  The staff was so excited.  Mario, one of our translators, asked me, “your church made all this?!”  He couldn’t believe it.  Thank you to Dulcy and her team.  Their hard work will be enjoyed by several children and families in Cerritos and Santa Rita.

A highlight everyday for our team was the music time with the kids.  Jeff Mize plays the guitar and everyone sings, laughs, and enjoys the time.  Today we taught the kids “This Little Light of Mine”.  We taught it to them in english and it was amazing how fast they picked it up.  We used the song as a reminder to them to carry Christ to their families and to their community.  El Cerritos and Santa Rita are definately poor communities but you can see hope and light in the children of the community.  We are so thankful to have been a small part of what God is doing in these two communities in Guatemala City.  He IS the Light of the World!

Tomorrow will be a day of sightseeing and shopping in Antigua and then we’re headed home on Saturday.  Thank you FBC family for your prayers.  We look forward to sharing our trip with you.

Christ First,

Jimmy

Final Update:

I wanted to share some prayer requests that the children had.  Brandon C. asked several of the kids both at the CTC and the church to write down a prayer request.  Our translators put them in english for us.  This is just a sample of some of the requests but it gives you a great insight on what these children deal with.  Please read over these and PRAY!
